“The paintings of Cathérine Claeyé move always on the cutting edge; on the edge of everything and nothing, the seemingly silly and the sublime. In her landscapes she knows how very little resources, sometimes just a few, sparse keys or brushstrokes, can reveal a very different spatial experience. As a result she creates a great tension between the material components of the painting and the virtual space of the image, between the real and the imaginary, the literal and the possible. That gives her images a great evocative power and a particular vulnerability, a childlike playfulness and an existential tension. Maybe we could call this tension between something and nothing, concrete materiality in relation to that sparkling, fragile, fleeting beauty, erotic.”
